Политико-правовая концепция консервативной интерпретации Конституции [Constitution, U.S.], в рамках которой принято ограничивать права федеральной власти исключительно теми, которые зафиксированы в документе. Это толкование конституции отстаивали Т. Джефферсон [Jefferson, Thomas], Дж. Мэдисон [Madison, James] и другие в противовес концепции широкого толкования Конституции [loose construction], которой придерживался А. Гамильтон [Hamilton, Alexander]. Исторически дебаты разворачивались вокруг интерпретации раздела 8 статьи I [Article I, Section 8], определяющего полномочия Конгресса [Congress, U.S.]. В последнее время звучит и как призыв ограничения прав судебной власти в плане интерпретации гражданских свобод.
